NZ-IKW International Kayaking Week / Festival |
|
The first NZ IKW was a Smash Hit ! So it’s on again. The weekdays following CB-2010 (ie: Monday-Thursday, March 1,2,3,4) will be packed with Kayak events, celebrating the Hauraki Gulf and the kayaking opportunities in the Auckland area. This will be the second IKW (International Kayaking Week) and the numbers will be kept small to retain the intimate feeling. Choices of day-trips, overnight-touring, competitions and The goals are minimal-cost, good kayaking and good fun on and off the Hauraki Gulf. We intend it to work for Aucklanders and for visitors from near & far – South Islanders, Australians, Germans, Americans – we aim to make it work for all. Unfortunately, numbers will be limited for the event (to keep it both fun & manageable) and is restricted to CB-2010 attendees. Sign up for CB-2010 without delay, to get in the queue. Connect the dots between the two weekend events – Coastbusters & NZKBGT – with a laid-back or full-on (you decide) 4-5 days of on & off-the-water fun. Kayakers from the South Island, Australia and further afield can now enjoy a 10-day long kayaking bonanza – to make travelling to Coastbusters even more worthwhile. IKW – Based around Martin’s Bay camp
thanks to Ruth Henderson for these photos and a number of the other photos on this page |
IKW main activity will be hosted at the Martin’s Bay campsite. This is a coastal camp (administered by the Rodney Council) and run by a couple who are keen to make our stay a memorable one. Campsites will be near the water’s edge. Bring your wheels though - for low tide. We would like to reserve the cabins for overseas people without camping gear. All meals will be provided - done by a professional caterer An all-weather shelter provides seating for meals and off-the-water sessions on kayaking-related topics. We’re lining up some interesting ones. |
Martin’s Bay camp is ideally located – paddle destinations abound.
This list is just some of what’s available within – Kawau Island – superb coastline and beautiful walking trails, – Moturekareka & Motuketekete – magic ’secret’ islands – Motuora Island – overnight camping in a DoC bird sanctuary – Beehive & Rabbit Islands, Martello & Passage Rocks – superb & sheltered estuaries – Mahurangi & Matakana rivers, Click here for a high-resolution version of this chart (Use your browser’s back-arrow to return here) |

Beehive Island Some days... we do have a little wind
Martin’s Bay – 75 km from Auckland and easy driving distance: – to Warkworth (for beer, wine & other emergency supplies) – to Tawharanui – for surfing – to Goat Island for the Marine Reserve Click here for a map relating Martins Bay to Auckland
Easy paddling distance from Sullivan’s Bay. We expect some will choose to paddle the 4 nm (8Km – 1.5 hour) up the coast from Sullivan’s Bay, after the close of Coastbusters on Sunday afternoon. Couples might chose to have one drive and the other paddle. (Use your browser’s back-arrow to return here) |

IKW – Costs and Organisation
IKW is a separate event from the Coastbusters weekend event and also from the NZKBGT event. A group of volunteer kayakers is organising the week and as the work has advanced, they’ve made a few changes. Details and a small registration form can be downloaded here (same form as at the top of this page – but note that it’s not the same as the Coastbusters registration form): Click here to download the Campsites / Cabin accomodation and communal food has been organised along with a few non-kayaking diversions. Cost has been kept ’at cost’.
If you’re coming from afar – and need a kayak or transport or have any other questions, read the Overseas Visitors page and contact Nick at
Not to repeat all the downloadable info, but the Martin’s Bay organisation covers you from Sunday afternoon though to Thursday morning - when you can either ’stay put’ or make a plan with others to explore other local destinations - on your way south to the NZKBGT at the Rotorua Lakes.

Auckland paddling (Google Map – area approx 160 x 110 Km) The Hauraki Gulf – bounded by the Auckland coastline and the Coromandel Peninsula to the SE, and protected by Great & Little Barrier Islands to the NE & N (from the open Pacific Ocean). Also visible is the huge Manukau Harbour – opening to the Tasman Sea to the West – and the even larger Kaipara Harbour to the NW. Few cities can have this much coastline ! |
